Post-Bachelor Specialization in Child Health and Pediatric Nursing

Course presentation

The Post-Bachelor Course of Specialization in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing , obtained a favorable opinion from the Bureau of the College of the Specialization in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing – Opinion nº12 / 2018 of 14 / 09/2018 and Favorable Opinion of the Order of Nurses on 09/14/2018 (Ref. SAI-OE / 2018/8571). The curriculum structure and study plan were published in Ordinance No. 317/2019 of 18 September.
The course lasts 18 months with 90 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), with 2250 total hours. The structure of the course consists of theoretical, theoretical-practical components, seminars, internships and tutorial guidance. It works during the day, and some activities, namely, the internships take place at night, on weekends and on public holidays.

Objectives and Specific Skills of the Nurse Specialist in SIP

The following general objectives of the course are (DUBLIN Descriptors):
Deepen technical-scientific, relational, professional, ethical and legal knowledge and skills in the areas of child health nursing and pediatrics based on the knowledge of the 1st cycle;
Possess comprehension skills that form the basis for the development and / or original applications, namely in the context of research;
Knowing how to apply knowledge and develop the ability to understand and solve problems in new and unfamiliar situations in multidisciplinary contexts;
Integrate knowledge to manage complex situations and develop solutions / reflections or make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information;
To have a reflective practice on the ethical, legal and social professional implications and responsibilities that result or condition the solutions and judgments formulated in the practice situations;
Communicate their conclusions, knowledge and reasoning behind them, within the team including the child and family in a clear and unambiguous way;
Develop self-knowledge in a self-oriented or autonomous way.
The specific competencies to be developed are those defined by Article 4 of Regulation No. 422/2018, of 12 July – Regulation of the Specific Competencies of the Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing and which are the following:
1. Assist the child / youth with the family, in maximizing their health
Implements and manages, in partnership, a health plan that promotes parenting, the ability to manage the regime and the social reintegration of the child / young person.
Diagnoses early and intervenes in common diseases and at risk situations that may negatively affect the life or quality of life of the child / young person.
2. Cares for the child / youth and family in situations of special complexity
Recognizes situations of instability of vital functions and risk of death and provides appropriate nursing care.
Performs differentiated management of pain and well-being of the child / youth, optimizing responses.
Promotes the adaptation of the child / young person and family to chronic illness, oncological illness, disability / inability.
3. Provides specific care in response to the needs of the life and development cycle of children and young people
Promotes child growth and development.
Promotes bonding in a systematic way, particularly in the case of the sick newborn or newborn with special needs.
Communicates with the child and family in a manner appropriate to the stage of development and family culture.
Promotes adolescent self-esteem and self-determination in health choices.

Access conditions

Candidates who meet the conditions set out in article 12 of Administrative Rule 268/2002 of March 13 may apply for this course:
a) Hold a degree in Nursing, or legal equivalent;
b) Hold the professional title of nurse (Ordem dos Enfermeiros – Portugal);
c) Have at least two years of professional experience as a nurse.
