Course presentation

The post-bachelor course in Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing aims to ensure the acquisition and / or development of scientific, technical, relational, ethical and research competencies to intervene in the provision of care in the clinical area of medical-surgical nursing. The course also aims to enable students to integrate multidisciplinary teams in order to contribute to the promotion of the highest level of health of the population and to enable the development of research in the area of medical and surgical nursing, contributing to the creation of scientific evidence. In addition to promoting the development of good practices in a work context, the School intends to prepare nurses who can act in society, who are able to intervene and be able to deal with social and professional changes in the future and who contribute to the advancement of the profession in order to respond to the needs of the individual, family and community. The learning outcomes proposed for the Course assume as a prerequisite the possession of a degree in nursing. Thus, considering that students already possess the competencies established for the first level of nursing training, it is intended that they develop and deepen them in the area of surgical medical nursing so that the nurse asserts herself as a key element in the conception, management and supervision care clinic of greater complexity.
This course confers the necessary qualification to obtain the professional title of Specialist Nursing in Medical-Surgical Nursing , conferred by the Order of Nurses.


With the objectives of this course, directed to the areas of medical-surgical nursing, we intend that students throughout the course develop the capacity to:
Apply their knowledge in an in-depth and systematized way and their ability to understand and solve problems in the area of medical-surgical nursing care;
Collect, interpret and synthesize information on the evaluation of critically ill patients (urgency, emergency and intensive care) in order to act with quality standards;
To implement a specialized practice in urgent / emergency situations and in situations of catastrophe according to the ethical, deontological and legal principles of the professional practice;
Integrate specific knowledge about wounds that optimize the actions for their prevention and to reach the best treatment with the best results;
To analyze the scientific bases of its intervention in the area of medical-surgical nursing and to implement an evidence-based practice;
Communicate and establish appropriate interpersonal relationships with the individual and the family in a crisis situation, as well as in the health team, motivating and knowing how to manage conflictive situations;
Collaborate effectively with transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams, knowing the contribution of other professionals and respective competencies, either as a participant, leader or consultant in the scope of specialized nursing in medical-surgical nursing;
Implement information management, human capital and material resources in order to better decide on the consumption of health care;
Understand, evaluate and contribute to the development of the performance of services provided to users or populations;
Critically analyze the theories and models of health concepts, promotion and protection of health and prevention of diseases and disabilities;
Integrate knowledge and understand in depth the physiological, psychological, family and social problems of the patient in terminal illness, that allow him to act with the patient, his relatives and / or caregivers;
Reflect on their practice and their profession in order to identify personal and professional goals for continuous professional development and promoting lifelong learning on an autonomous basis;
Formulate new questions, select, plan and implement research strategies in the area of medical-surgical nursing, review results in a systematized form and disclose them appropriately.

Access conditions

Candidates who meet the conditions set out in article 12 of Administrative Rule 268/2002 of March 13 may apply for this course:
a) Hold a degree in Nursing, or legal equivalent;
b) Hold the professional title of nurse (Ordem dos Enfermeiros – Portugal);
c) Have at least two years of professional experience as a nurse.
