In order to respond to the training needs of nurses temporarily authorized for the Nursing Practice for 5 years, as well as nurses with professional experience in Occupational Health / Occupational Health Services, but without sufficient training, the Directorate General for Health , in agreement with the Nurses Order, established the requirement for specific training in “Nursing at Work , through the publication of Technical Information No. 10/2015.
The General Directorate of Health, defines that the activity of the Work Nurse is directed to the health management of the worker or groups of workers. It focuses on promoting and protecting health and well-being in the workplace, in order to promote healthy and safe work environments.
Given the proven insufficiency of qualified nurses and the legislative requirements (Law nº102 / 2009, of September 10, article 3, paragraph 2, point d) of the Statute of the Nurses’ Order, republished by Law no. 111 / 2009, of September 16 and also the Guideline of DGS009 / 2014 of march 6) there is a need and obligation to guarantee training that provides the Work Nurse with a set of knowledge on health and safety at work occupational health.
The organization of the Course is in accordance with Regulation No 348/2008 of July 1, which establishes the principles governing the application of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to the training provided by the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (IPV).


The Post-Graduation Course in Nursing at Work seeks to develop skills and train nurses, enabling them with knowledge, skills and attitudes in the field of occupational safety and health, in particular, in work nursing. In this sense, this course aims to promote the construction, diffusion and application of knowledge, in a logic of implementation of policies and practices appropriate to nursing needs, namely:
Acquire instrumental, interpersonal and ethical skills essential to responsible, qualified intervention in the area of occupational health and health;
To know the legal and normative framework, ethics and professional deontology in the field of work nursing;
Understand the role of the nurse in occupational health and safety / occupational health;
Acquire knowledge for the organization and management of health and safety at work;
To train nurses to design and implement entrepreneurial projects in the area of occupational health / safety;
Ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills that allow identifying the factors that potentiate or put at risk the health of the workers;
Acquire knowledge to intervene in first aid situations and in urgent / emerging situations;
Carry out health education with regard to safety, hygiene and safety in the workplace;
Know how to act in situations of accident or sudden illness;
Recognize national and international occupational health policies;
Raise awareness for research and use the scientific evidence in the area of occupational health

Access conditions

You can apply for access to the Post-Graduation Course in Nursing at Work :
a) Holders of the degree of licenciado or legal equivalent ;
b) Holders of a foreign higher education degree in the field of Health conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process;
c) Holders of a foreign higher education degree in the area of Health that is recognized as satisfying the objectives of the degree of licenciado by the scientifically competent scientific body of the higher education institution where they wish to be admitted;
d) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum of relevance in the area of health, which is recognized as attesting ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the scientific body competent statutorily of the higher education institution where they wish to be admitted.
