The transformations in Portuguese society in recent decades have led to significant changes in family structure and organization, with new family structures demarcated from the traditional structure, requiring additional skills from those whose mission is to respond to their needs in health care. Concomitantly, primary health care reform is a reality and new training needs emerge.
The Family Nurse figure emerges with increased competences, considering the family as the focus of care. The analysis of the structure, development and functionality of the family and intervention adjusted to the needs identified in the family as care unit require knowledge and skills that allow the evaluation and autonomous intervention of the nurse.
The family as a target of care in a growing centrality in health systems and care is emphasized in the guidelines of WHO, the Nurses’ Order expressed in the Framework and Quality Standards of Nursing Care and in the National Health Plan 2011-2016, where it is reaffirmed strategies focused on family and life cycle, disease management or diseases, to achieve health gains. Notwithstanding Decree-Law 118/2014 establishes the principles and framework for the activity of the family nurse within the scope of the functional units for the provision of Primary Health Care, namely in the Family Health Units (FHU) and Personalized Healthcare Units (PHU). Hence, in this paradigm, the need for the creation of the Post-Graduation in Family Health Nursing for FHU and PHU nurses has acquired specific competences in Family Health Nursing..
The organization of the Course is in accordance with Regulation No 348/2008 of July 1, which establishes the principles governing the application of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to the training provided by the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (IPV).
The Post-Graduation Course in Family Health Nursing aims to provide nurses with skills that allow them to care for families throughout the life cycle, in all phases of development, in times of transition and in moments of particular vulnerability / crisis.
The Post-Graduation Course in Family Health Nursing has the general objective of developing scientific, relational, technical and ethical competences adequate to the care delivery evidencing the role of the nurse integrated in the different functional PHU and directed to the provision of nursing care families at all stages of life and in all community contexts, including:
To understand the theoretical references and foundations of Family Nursing;
Develop a systemic view of family functioning;
To acquire knowledge that enables nurses to make decisions in the process of family assessment and intervention, especially in transition processes of special complexity;
To integrate the Family Assessment and Intervention Models into praxis as a guarantee of the development of good practices;
Maintain a situation of special complexity formulating adequate responses to the processes of family transitions.

You can apply for access to the Post-Graduation Course in Family Health Nursing:
a) Holders of the degree of licenciado or legal equivalent
b) Holders of a foreign higher education degree in the field of Health conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process;
c) Holders of a foreign higher education degree in the area of Health that is recognized as satisfying the objectives of the degree of licenciado by the scientifically competent scientific body of the higher education institution where they wish to be admitted;
d) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum of relevance in the area of health, which is recognized as attesting ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the scientific body competent statutorily of the higher education institution where they wish to be admitted.
