The Viseu Higher School of Health is a Public Higher Education Institution integrated in the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, endowed with legal personality and administrative, financial, scientific and pedagogical autonomy and its organization and management is governed by Law no. 54 / 90, dated September 05, with some specifics deriving from Decree-Law no. 205/95, of 08 August.
The ESSV, created by Ordinance No. 216/2005 of February 24, is heiress of the old School of Nursing of Viseu created in 1971 by Ordinance no. 228/71 of May 1, reconverted in Nursing School of Viseu by the Ordinance No. 821/89, of September 15, after the integration of nursing education into the national education system at the level of polytechnic higher education, as a result of the publication of Decree-Law no. 480/88 of 23 December.
The School is governed by the Statutes approved by the Normative Order No. 52/99, which contemplated the joint tutelage of the Ministries of Education and Health, published in in the Portuguese Official journal , I Série – B, n.º 257, de Following Resolution of the Council of Ministers no. 140/98 of 4 December and Law no. 26/2000 of 23 August, the School was transferred to the exclusive protection of the Ministry of Science and of Higher Education. In view of the changes to its legal framework.

The School began its activity in October of 1974 with the Course of General Nursing, that worked until 1992.
In April 1990 he started the Nursing Higher Course – conferring the bachelors degree – approved by Administrative Rule no. 299/90, dated April 12, later amended by Administrative Rule no. 357/95, of April 24. In March 1996, with the courses of Specialized Studies (CESE) in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing and Maternal and Obstetrical Health Nursing, approved by Decree No. 1137/95 of September 15 and Ordinance No. 1126 / 95 of 14 September, respectively, came to confer the degree of licensee. In October 1997, the EESC began its work on Community Health and Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, approved by Ordinance No. 544/97 and Ordinance No. 545/97, of 23 July.

Subsequently, with the publication of Decree-Law no. 353/99, of 03 September, the general rules of nursing education in the field of polytechnic higher education were established: general nursing education through one-year Degree Courses with the duration of 4 years and specialized training through non-degree post-graduate specialization courses. The same diploma also approved two transitional measures: The Complementary Year of Training for students who attended the baccalaureate nursing course at the time, which allowed them to reach the Degree, and created the Complementary Training Course which allowed nurses with the bachelors degree the access to the degree of licensee. The Nursing Undergraduate Course and the Complementary Training Year were created by Ordinance No. 729/2000, of October 05; the Complementary Training Course was created by Administrative Rule no. 98/2000, of 22 February.
At ESSV the academic year 2005-2006 was decisive for the implementation of the objectives and philosophy of the Bologna Process.
This year, the Nursing Undergraduate Course plan was reorganized and a compliance plan was drawn up, based on Decree-Law no. 42/2005 of 22 February, Decree-Law no. 74/2006 of 24 March, as amended by Decree-Law no. 107/2008 of 25 June and Order no. 7287-B / 2006 (2nd Series). Accordingly, pursuant to articles 63 and 64 of Decree-Law no. 74/2006 of 24 March and through Order No. 16043/2006 (2nd series), of 30 June, of the General Director of Higher Education, published in the Diário da R-B-AD-761/2006, the adequacy of the Nursing Course given by the School of Health of Viseu, to the appropriate cycle of studies, was registered in the Republic, 2nd Series, nº 147, of August 1, 2006. to the Bologna process.
The Equivalence Plan for the transition process was approved by a Scientific Council meeting on July 18, 2007. In addition to these courses, the School has realized post graduate courses, not conferring academic degrees.
